The „Tornado" in our flight school is the helicopter Hughes 269 C. Many helicopter pilots worldwide had their first flight experiences with this type of helicopter.

The Hughes 269 embodies the principle of simplicity as a classical example for the basic helicopter training. Its cabin is generously glassed and has three seats, and also offers an outstanding view and is equipped with complete dual control.

The originally light and two seats helicopter with the designation Model 269 was developed by the enterprise Hughes on behalf of US-Army. But the US-Army held the Model 269 as not suitable for fight missions and chose therefore the Model 269A in 1964 as their training helicopter, in order to replace the TH-23 and labelled it TH-55A Osage. Altogether 792 helicopters of type TH-55 were delivered till 1969. It served as the primary helicopter for the training of the US-Army until it was replaced by the UH-1 Huey in 1988. Over 60,000 Army-pilots trained on the TH-55 at that time. It was thereby one of the longest serving training helicopter of the US-Army.

Already in 1986, the company Schweizer acquired all rights for the helicopter type Hughes 269 from McDonnell Douglas, who bought Hughes in 1984 and renamed it to McDonnell Douglas Hubschrauber Systeme. After a few years, the company Schweizer received the FAA type certificate, it became commonly known as the Schweizer 300. The Schweizer company made over 250 improvements, though the basic design remains unchanged until today. Today it is used particularly as a training helicopter, for photo flights and sometimes by the police.

We will train you on the Hughes 269 C as a helicopter pilot in our flight school as well. We further use it for photo- and round trip flights, because it is ideal for such tasks. Although it's a little more expensive than an airplane, though it offers several advantages for these purposes. Photographing or filming is much easier and more concentrated on the motives, because the helicopter (on the contrary of an airplane) can fly very slowly and "stand" still in the air. It's possible to choose the optimal point and angle for recording, and if necessary we can also remove the doors, in order to offer the camera man the necessary working conditions.
